PAINT 5 POINTS
Paint 5 Points is an annual event held in order to celebrate the local flavor found in the Five Points community. Local artists are commissioned to create works of art inspired by the Five Points landscape. These works are later sold at a silent auction held at a local business in Five Points.
This was a program intended to celebrate local artists and the community of Five Points. Ten local artists are chosen to capture a 'snapshot' in time of this vibrant community, in a sense immortalizing it for future generations. "We want people who come here to see professional artists working on sidewalks, at the fountain and in our parks," said Dennis Hiltner, owner of The Gourmet Shop, and president of the Five Points Association. "Artists at work convey a sense of vitality and style about the community where they live and work. They send the message that beauty and life abound, something people of all ages and makeup understand and enjoy."
Along with creating pieces that adds to a collection of art illustrating the effervescence of Five Points, artists are required to spend time at area schools discussing their craft and the importance of art in the community. This program does not just benefit the community, but the artists as well. The artists receive media coverage and publicity brought about by Columbia's constant interest in the Five Points area.
