In the last seventy-five years Five Points has entertained millions of visitors and residents. Twelve years ago plans for its face-lift and infrastructure improvement began. This plan includes infrastructure revitalizations, a new sewer system, new streets and sidewalks, improved pedestrian and community safety measures and a whole gamut of aesthetic improvements to the area. The project began in 2004 and at $31 million is the largest of its type ever to be undertaken in South Carolina. The twenty-six pound, 198 page plan is a visual representation of the enormity of this venture. The Future-Five project, which is a continuation of Beauti-Five, has five main goals:
- Village feel- Maintain, promote and enhance Five Points unique village like atmosphere of thriving business and pedestrian-friendly environments.
- Parking and safety- Maintain and improve its commercial vitality by providing improved safety, ample parking sophisticated signage and other conveniences.
- Promote balance of homes and stores-Improve the 24-hour activity and pedestrian focus of Five Points by establishing and promoting a healthy mix of commercial, office and residential uses.
- Improved buildings-Enhance the character of existing buildings to improve visual vitality. Encourage new buildings to blend with existing structures.
- More shops and homes-Create strategies to encourage and guide future infill development, more investment and a stronger staying power.
The Future-Five project is being lead by Doug Quackenbush, his team and the Five Points Association. City Council woman Ann Sinclair, a long time supporter of Five Points comments that "I think congratulations are in order to the Association and to the leadership of Doug Quackenbush on a wonderful vision for Five Points! With this plan, property owners, both current and future, can strive to maintain and strengthen this unique, vibrant commercial area. I am excited about the vision offered by Future Five.
The Beauti-Five project in cooperation with the Future Five plan is essential to the success and vitality of Five Points. Though construction has caused inconveniences , it is an important step in creating a new and more prosperous Five Points for all of us to enjoy.
